Identifying Good Practices to Foster Effective Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue for Peace and Solidarity: Lessons Learned

Excellencies, distinguished delegates,

Let me start by thanking the Republic of Azerbaijan and co-organizers for holding this event dedicated to the promotion of intercultural and interreligious dialogue.

It is a valuable opportunity for the United Nations to take a closer look at this important element of culture of peace. There is a lot to explore in terms of how intercultural and interreligious dialogue could be leveraged in different contexts and areas of UN activities.

We are convinced that such a dialogue boosts social development through enhancing social cohesion. It serves the purpose of conflict prevention and conflict resolution by addressing their root causes, such as discrimination on ethnic and religious grounds, xenophobia and related intolerance. It contributes to better understanding of values and ensures respect for human dignity. Yet it is often overlooked in intergovernmental discussions and negotiations, as well as in their outcomes.

Today, the UN, which was once conceived as an organization for developing cooperation and friendly relations, became arena for devision and at times it is even instrumentalized for deepening confrontation. However we see the potential for the United Nations to be a tool for dialogue. The idea of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence must remain at the heart of our work in every forum. In this vein, we must praise the exemplary efforts by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.

As a multinational and multireligious State-civilization, the Russian Federation knows firsthand that cultural and religious diversity and respectful dialogue is a treasure to be shared. This approach is at the heart of our state policy. We consider it important to give platform for the exchange of relevant national experiences, including through annual international events dedicated to intercultural and interreligious dialogue.

This year, we are hosting, among others, the meeting of the Group of Strategic Vision “Russia – Islamic World” in May, the Conference on the Protection of Traditional Spiritual and Moral Values on the sidelines of the XIV Saint Petersburg International Legal forum in June, XII Saint Petersburg International United Cultures Forum in September. We would like to use this opportunity to invite all those sharing values of interreligious and intercultural dialogue to come to Russia and to participate in the above-mentioned events.

We have to recognize that not only prejudice, but at times national policies aimed at artificially constructing monoethnic States or social engineering aimed at swiping out certain traditions, cultures or religions and values undermine dialogue and foster confrontation. So, let us be diligent students of history and ensure that we pass on to future generations a world free from discrimination and prejudice.

I thank you for your attention.

Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation Ms. Maria Zabolotskaya.
